But my bro is doing some serious work to my bucket.
Everything is being taken down to baremetal or the OEM primer. Even with the low low price of family labor I am nearing the $2300 mark on materials and there is still much more body work to do.
After having him knock out the front bumper and fenders I took the car over for the main work. "Bring donuts" is what he told me when I got the car strapped in the trailer. Can't say no to the guy thats gonna be working on your car!
The morning I dropped my car off at his garage. Oh, I didn't just leave it there. GTFOutta here! I ended up doing all the bitch work. Moldings, skirts, trim, sun roof, door panels, rear tails (again-parachute), splash guards, put it on some stock wheels, and got the game plan started pointing out any major dents or holes that needed to be welded. I went by this past Weds and my brother was getting down on this ****. No joke, he was moving at a crazy ass pace and the car is damn near complete as far as body work goes. The doors, quarters and hatch were all stripped to bare metal in few days!
Here is a video of good ol' body man **** talkin'.
Finish the drivers side door and quarter panel and possibly start on the top.
But he wants to primer the bottom half (doors, quarters, deck lid) on Wednesday. Something about rust and leaving the metal exposed for too long...*shrugs* I dunno much about this body work stuff, but whatever he says goes!
After not doing anything to my car this week, I finally got over there to see if my brother was doing anything. After all, this was his birthday week and Im sure he spend most of it relaxing.
I get over there today to see if he got the bug finished. The base coat was dry and he started spraying the clear.
And out in the sun to "Ghetto Bake"
The fenders should be done early next week for the bug, then we are back on schedule. Hopefully...
Still not done with the bug's fenders but my brother did decide to see how the transtar primer cuts. Needless to say he is very happy with the way it builds and the way it sands. He did the door and worked on the rocker panel. The rocker needed some work due to a jack slipping incident that happened last year.
The little pieces I've been working on almost ready for primer on all of them.
We started working on the top finally. The upper part of the hatch already had body work done to it, but it had to be stripped down to bare metal.
My brother mixing some putty up, getting it ready.
Its amazing how long that little section took. Sanding it down to bare metal took quite a bit of time. Today I finished sanding the area around the sunroof to bare metal. Tomorrow some more cake making pictures.
Ill keep this one short and sweet since Im posting from my cell phone.
I just picked up a little gem that will aid in taking pictures in my brothers small garage. Wide angle cell phone camera lens :) No the fish eye one cause thats a bit too fancy for me, I just needed something to give me a better shot of the whole project. Im gonna be like a filipino at a family bbq, taking pictures of everything.

Sweet. Cant wait to see when its all done I dunno why I see this type of thing everyday, but im like super excited to see yours done lol
Thats good man! I think its a big change from the satin look everyone is going for nowadays and Im hoping to change the DSM stereotype a bit. You know the old, "DSMrs are cheap and ghetto" stereotype. I mean, it still is cheap labor, but it has been the best time I have ever had so far with my brother. Family time is something we all need more of especially at this point in our lives.
Its been a real positive thing for us and I may be giving into his "Build a lowrider" comments. Who knows, maybe later on down the road.
He always lets me know when our ideas are the right or wrong way. For instance, the glass, jams, and hatch. He tells me "in order for this to be a quality paint job, all that **** has to be done right." He keeps talking about tape lines, reducing cutting and buffing time and making sure everything is done right. His experience over the past 20 years shows on every job he does.
On the bug pictured above, he had to match the paint and clear to the old stuff by making it look ****ty and not to his standards. But it all matches and thats what counts. What he normally does is top notch work, but he has to lower his standards sometimes so the job matches the previous shops work. Tony knows what I mean. He could have sprayed the front end to look shiny as hell, but the rest of the bug would have been dull and it wouldnt look right.
Its been a learning experience for sure. Good times.
3 coats of primer on the body and thats a whole gallon down. I think my brother thinks he's building a lowrider or something, does this sound right Tony?
Final wetsanding this time for sure, for sure... next week.
Lol yea sounds about right. He wants that sheet metal flatter than a pre teen girl lol but its like a business card too. That cars sheet metal is gunna be hella flat and glossy. Paints gunna be so slick, Its gunna cut through the air like butter. XD
